Brazilian Butt Lift vs. Buttock Implants

If you spent any time listening to the radio in 2014, you probably heard Meghan Trainor’s hit song “All About the Bass”. Trainor’s catchy lyrics had people of all shapes and sizes singing along, expressing satisfaction with their bodies and unashamedly embracing their feminine beauty. Some women don’t have much “bass”, of course, and they should still be confident with whatever their mother gave them! But for those women who desire a Kardashianesque booty, a butt augmentation may be worth consideration. And while buttock implants are perhaps the most well-known form of butt augmentation surgery, many surgeons recommend Brazilian butt lifts as a favorable alternative. Here’s why.

Brazilian Butt Lifts

A Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure that uses the patient’s own fat to augment the buttocks. If patients have sufficient fat on other parts of their body (abdomen, thighs, back, etc.), surgeons can transfer the fat to the buttock region via a liposuction and insertion procedure. This process results in a natural looking, well-rounded derrière.

Surgeons often recommend Brazilian butt lifts over buttock implants for several reasons. First, the final result looks and feels far more natural than implants do. Second, patients often appreciate that fat is transferred from other parts of the body, producing a more complete shape overall. Next, butt lifts eliminate the risk of implant rupture. And lastly, there is no need for future surgeries to replace implants.

Buttock Implants

When patients don’t have much fat, the only viable option may silicone implants.

Buttock implants (also called gluteal implants) are prosthetic implants that are inserted into the buttocks through a surgical incision. These implants come in different shapes and sizes and function similarly to breast implants in their ability to add volume. Because buttock implants experience weight every time someone sits down, they must be incredible durable. Accordingly, the most common type of implants are made of solid silicone – a material that is generally resistant to rupture or tear. Surgeons insert buttock implants into a pocket they create either above or below the gluteus maximus muscle. After the implants are placed and the incisions are closed, patients can choose to use liposuction to enhance the final shape of the buttocks.

While buttock implants definitely enhance the butt, they will require eventual replacement, and they often tend to look less natural than the alternative option – Brazilian butt lifts.
