Medical Education and Training

Discovering His Passion for Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Aburto obtained his medical degree from the University of Monterrey in Mexico and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. During a five-year general surgery residency at Wright State University in Dayton, OH, he discovered a passion for surgical oncology and plastic surgery (oncoplasty) while caring for breast cancer and breast reconstruction patients. As someone with a family history of breast cancer, Dr. Aburto was very sympathetic to the needs of these patients. He pursued these areas of specialty with three additional years of training at the prestigious Ohio State University and James Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Choosing a surgeon who is experienced in treating breast cancer has many benefits over choosing a cosmetic breast surgeon for your breast procedure. Dr. Aburto is experienced in performing mastectomy to remove breast cancer, so he knows what this cancerous tissue looks and feels like. This means that even if you’re coming in for a cosmetic breast surgery like a breast lift, breast augmentation or breast revision, Dr. Aburto will keep an eye out for any abnormal tissue in your breasts. In multiple cases, he’s noticed abnormalities and had the breast tissue biopsied, which resulted in the detection of breast cancer that would otherwise not have been found.

Fine-Tuning His Expertise in Plastic Surgery

Following the completion of his plastic surgery fellowship in the United States, Dr. Aburto traveled to Europe for a fellowship in Ghent, Belgium. Through the Dutch Association for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (DAFPRS) and the Ghent Association of Plastic Surgeons (GAPS), Dr. Aburto worked alongside some of Europe’s leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons, further developing his expertise in cutting-edge techniques for breast surgery and facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Aburto fell in love with all types of plastic surgery and how artistry and medical knowledge can be combined to treat nearly any area of the body. He has extensive experience performing the broad spectrum of procedures available for addressing patients from head to toe.

As a member of the Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Centers of El Paso team, Dr. Aburto performs a full range of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures for the face, breast and body. He also specializes in trauma-related and cancer-related reconstructive surgery as well as facial reconstructive surgery.

Personal Life

Dr. Aburto is fluent in both English and Spanish and is a proud native El Pasoan. When he’s not at work, Dr. Aburto enjoys spending time with his three dogs, Canelo, Taco and Gaya, and is a big animal advocate. Guitar playing is one of his passions, although he doesn’t have the time to play as much as he’d like to (being a plastic surgeon allows him much less time than his high school days of playing in a rock band).

Dr. Aburto also enjoys outdoor activities like scuba diving and skeet shooting. More recently, he’s taken an interest in tequila tasting and taking courses to learn about the history of this spirit and the distilling process with the goal of becoming a tequila sommelier in the next couple of years.
