Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center of El Paso

There are many reasons why a woman may wish to enhance the appearance of her breasts. Some women feel that their natural breasts are not the right size to complement their figure or fill out clothing. Others have been through pregnancy or major weight loss and feel their breasts now look empty or deflated. Still others have simply always wanted larger breasts because it is more in line with their aesthetic tastes.

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is about much more than “going bigger.” In addition to adding volume, breast implants can improve breast shape, correct asymmetry, make you feel more confident in a swimsuit or lingerie, restore your body’s youthful contours and increase your sense of femininity. Breast augmentation is not a one-size-fits-all surgery — each procedure is carefully customized to the patient so your new look is perfectly suited to you.

No matter your reasoning for seeking a breast enhancement surgery, the expert surgeons and their teams at Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center of El Paso are here to help as you begin your journey toward a new, more confident you. Contact us online or call one of our two locations in El Paso today to book a consultation.

Breast Enhancement Procedure Process

Initial Consultation

You will have an initial consultation with either Dr. Jabor or Dr. Reynolds. This is your chance to have all of your questions about breast enlargement answered.

Health Evaluation

Dr. Jabor or Dr. Reynolds will evaluate your overall health to make sure you are not at risk for any unnecessary complications during the breast enlargement procedure or during the recovery from the surgery.

Surgery Preparation

You will be provided with directions you must follow prior to surgery. You may need to avoid smoking, certain vitamins and drugs, and some food or drink.

Breast Enhancement Considerations

Implant Type

Breast implants are filled with saline, silicone or a highly-cohesive silicone gel. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, and beautiful results can be achieved with any type of implant. Your doctor will help you make the right choice based on how you want your breasts to look and feel, the potential for complications, cost and incision technique.

Implant Volume

Though it’s natural to think in terms of bra cup size, it is not an accurate measurement because sizing varies between manufacturers. Instead, breast implants are measured by volume. The ideal size for your frame depends on multiple factors. Breast implant sizers and 3D computer simulation can help you visualize your results.

Implant Projection

Breast implants are made in a range of profiles that extend from low to ultra-high. The profile of an implant determines how far forward the breast projects from the chest wall. As a general rule, high profile implants give the breasts the fullest and most enhanced looked, while lower profile implants create a more natural effect.

Implant Placement

A breast implant may be placed using several different methods. At the Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center of El Paso, implants are usually placed completely behind the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement). Other placement options will be discussed at your consultation. This decision will be based on the size of your implants, the amount of natural breast tissue you have, your desired aesthetic and your tolerance for downtime.

Implant Technique

A breast augmentation procedure can be achieved through a variety of incision techniques. The doctor will determine the best incision technique for you based on the size and type of your implant.

What you should expect

Breast enlargement surgery is routinely done in the United States. It has a long track record of safety and a high rate of patient satisfaction, but it is still a surgical procedure and must be performed by a professional in a medical environment. On the day of the procedure, you should arrive in comfortable clothing with a trusted companion who can help transport you home after you awaken from your surgery. Breast augmentation is performed in an independent surgical facility or a hospital, typically under general anesthesia.

During the breast enhancement procedure, Dr. Jabor or Dr. Reynolds will make an incision using the technique chosen during your consultation. He will then create a pocket in the agreed-upon location and insert the breast implant. Depending on the kind of implant you have chosen, it may already be filled or it may need to be filled during your procedure. If the implant must be filled, your doctor will fill it with a saline solution (sterile saltwater). Your surgeon will close the incision once the implant is in position and place bandages around the area to aid the healing process.

Healing Once Your Breast Enlargement Procedure Is Finished

After a short rest in the recovery room, you will be released to return home and begin the healing process. You will need to arrange for a trusted friend or family member to pick you up and drive you home. Ideally, they will remain with you for at least the first 24 hours after your surgery. Dr. Jabor and Dr. Reynolds will provide you with prescriptions for pain management and aftercare instructions.

Expect to take it easy for the first few days after surgery. Swelling, bruising and soreness are normal during this time. You will not be permitted to perform strenuous activities since they could put strain on your incisions. Arrange to have assistance with household tasks and/or childcare while you’re in the critical initial stages of healing. Wear your post-surgical garments as instructed to minimize swelling and help your breasts adapt to their new size and shape. Most breast augmentation patients require a week away from work or school.

You are encouraged to contact our practice at any time if you have any questions or concerns about your breast augmentation recovery. Please be sure to attend all follow-up appointments as they are designed to ensure your safety and results.

Life After Breast Enhancement Surgery

Your breasts will be noticeably bigger right away, but what you see immediately after surgery will not be your final result. Swelling after breast augmentation can be significant and will make your breasts appear larger than they actually are. You will see your final results when the swelling subsides and your implants have settled. Your scars will be hidden by most clothing and the natural structures of your body, and will fade in the months following your procedure. Once your recovery is complete, the results of your breast enhancement surgery will be long-lasting. Your breasts will look and feel natural, your body will be more balanced and you can enjoy a renewed sense of confidence in your figure.

It’s important to remember that breast augmentation cannot stop the natural changes that occur in breast tissue over time. Your breasts will continue to change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts and other factors. If you grow less satisfied with the appearance of your breasts in the future, you may choose to undergo an additional procedure to exchange your implants or restore a more youthful shape and elevation to your breasts.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

How much does breast augmentation surgery cost?

In general, the cost of breast augmentation varies depending on the type of implants used, the location of the practice and the experience of the surgeon. The total financial investment for the procedure may include fees for the surgeon, the implants, the facility, the anesthesia, post-surgery garments, pain medication and other associated costs. Dr. Reynolds or Dr. Jabor will inform you of the cost after your goals have been discussed and your personalized breast augmentation treatment plan has been created.

In most instances, breast augmentation is not covered by health insurance because it is an elective surgery, not a medically-necessary procedure. Insurance coverage is typically only available for breast implants when they are part of breast reconstruction for a patient who has had a single or double mastectomy. If you are concerned about paying for your procedure, our friendly practice staff will be happy to discuss financing options with you.

How long do breast implants last?

There is a common misconception that breast implants must be replaced after 10 years. While it is true that implants are not considered lifetime devices, the 10-year lifespan is a myth. Breast implants do not need to be replaced unless you experience complications. Most breast implant manufacturers offer a lifetime replacement warranty in case of rupture or deflation. Some patients choose to exchange their implants if they want a larger or smaller size or a different shape. Other patients choose to remove their implants because their aesthetic tastes have changed.

What procedures are related to breast augmentation?

Procedures that enhance the bust are often performed together. In particular, breast augmentation is frequently paired with breast lift surgery (mastopexy) to increase the fullness and projection of the breasts while simultaneously addressing sagging, stretched skin and downward-pointing nipples. A breast lift elevates the breasts into a more youthful position, but does not affect breast size. Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts and can make them appear perkier, but breast implants alone may not provide enough lift for someone with advanced sagging (ptosis). Many patients find that combining these procedures yields the best result.

Making the necessary incision

Dr. Jabor or Dr. Reynolds will make an incision either next to the areola, in the inframammary crease or in the transaxillary crease. Together with your doctor, you will decide what incision technique is best for you before your surgery.

Create the appropriate pocket

Your surgeon will create a pocket inside the breast for the implant. Depending on where you have decided to place the implant, the pocket will be created either in front of, partially behind or completely behind the chest wall muscle.

Insert the breast implant

After the pocket has been created, the breast implant will be inserted. Breast enhancement can be performed with an implant that is filled prior to the surgery or an implant that is filled after it has been placed. If the implant must be filled during the procedure, your doctor will fill it with saline. Otherwise, after the implant is placed, the breast enhancement surgery is complete. The doctor will close the incision and place bandages around the area to aid the healing process.

Breast Enhancement Healing Process

Once the breast enhancement surgery is finished, you will be able to return home to recover. After a few days of healing, the gauze will be removed from the area, but you will still wear a surgical bra as directed. There are no sutures to be removed, and any swelling should subside after a few weeks. For a few weeks, your breasts may be sore, but light activity and work can be resumed after just a couple days of rest.

Dr. Reynolds or Dr. Jabor will inform you of how long after the surgery you should wait to resume some normal activities and exercise. Scarring from breast enhancement should lessen as the healing process continues, but good placement of the incision and the natural creases or folds of the body should conceal any scars.
