Skin Care Tips and Cosmetic Surgery Options for Timeless Beauty

“Thirty, flirty, and thriving” - we all remember how adorable Jennifer Garner was in the 2004 film 13 Going on 30, and those of us who are in our 30s resonate with this statement. Thirty is the new 20, and 40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new… okay, you get the point.

But really, technological advancements in cosmetic surgery and scientifically proven skin care regimens make it possible for us to take years - even decades - off of our faces. Whether you are in your 20s or your 60s, here are a few tips for keeping that youthful glow.

Exfoliate Gently

Sometime around your 30s, your collagen production and skin cell turnover tend to downshift, causing dead skin cells to linger on your face. This causes dullness and dryness and can even enhance the prominence of wrinkles. To encourage luminous skin, you will need to exfoliate more often that you did when you were younger. Make sure to use a mild, gentle exfoliator and follow up with a dermatologist-recommended moisturizer to avoid excessive dryness.

Eat the Rainbow

Many people try to eat healthy to improve their physique as they age, but eating a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet will also benefit your skin. The best way to ensure that you are getting the proper nutrients you need for youthful skin is by eating the rainbow. In her book What Color Is Your Diet?, author Susan Bowman, MS, RD, CSSD warns against the beige diet - the standard American diet of sugar and grains. Instead, Bowman recommends leafy, green vegetables, which have high concentrations of vitamin K and folic acid. She also recommends orange foods, which tend to be rich in beta-carotene, and blue/purple foods, which are teeming with antioxidants.

Sunscreen Up

We all love the sun, but the sun doesn’t love our skin. Sun protection is important for people who want to keep their skin looking young, and it is a critical component of overall health. Dermatologists recommend that people apply sunscreen or a moisturizer with an SPF of 30 above or below their make up. This will prevent sun spots and wrinkles down the road.

Try Something New

For those of us who want to reverse aging or who want an extra preventative edge, there are several cosmetic procedures that can do wonders for our skin. Injectables are safe, effective, and non-invasive options for people who want to smooth fine lines or augment areas of their face. Chemical peels can help with scarring, and various cosmetic surgery options are also available to patients who are looking to tuck, lift, and tighten.
